Curb Appeal Tips for Selling Your Home

Does curb appeal really matter? Yes! When it comes to showing a home - first impressions are everything. A potential home buyer may see your home for sale online, and odds are they’ll drive by it before contacting a Realtor to schedule a viewing. This is your chance to make sure they want to walk in that door!

So how do you make that happen? We’ve put together a few tips that can enhance your home’s curb appeal to draw those potential home buyers inside.

1. Become the Buyer

Take a walk around your property. What would turn you away if you were looking to buy this home? Make a list of anything that needs attention. Decide which things may need cleaning, repairing or replacing. Consider driving by your home at night to see it in a different light. You may notice some of the details that you normally wouldn’t see.

2. Look up

As a homeowner, you probably haven’t given your roof a second glance. However, it is one of the main selling points in regards to curb appeal. A roof is one of the first things a potential home buyer will look at. What condition is it in? If it’s looking dingy or missing shingles, that is certainly something you will want to address. A good cleaning or some repairs will go a long way in the eyes of a buyer.

3. Get a Second Opinion

Ever heard of the term “noseblind?” A homeowner can experience the same effects in a visual sense. If you’ve lived in a home long enough, you may no longer notice some of the smaller defects such as chipping paint or cracked steps. You may benefit from a fresh set of eyes to help you see what needs to be fixed and cleaned. Get an outsider who’s not as familiar with the property to help you prioritize your to do list.

4. Don’t be Afraid of Pressure

You’d be surprised how many issues can be solved with the not-so-gentle hand of a pressure washer. Dirty siding and decks, oil-stained driveways, and dingy looking walkways can all be given a facelift just by pressure washing them. Consider renting one from your local home improvement store if you don’t have access to one.

5. Brighten Things Up

Planting a pop of colour is one of the simpler things you can do to add visual interest to your landscape. Brighten up your front flower beds and window boxes with some colourful flowers. A little research may help you find annual plants that will bloom throughout the year, making maintenance a snap.

7. Now Lighten Things Up

Solar lights. Need I say more? Not only are they cost efficient, they can highlight some of your homes best attributes when placed strategically. Installing solar lights along walkways and decking, in flower beds, or near any custom detailing will automatically draw the buyer’s eye to where you want it.

8. Add a Touch of Paint

Chipped and peeling paint is often something that often gets overlooked. Not only is it relatively cheap, a crisp coat of paint can really spruce up an exterior. So grab yourself a gallon of paint and get to work painting those doors, trim and shutters.

Many of these solutions are simple and cost effective, but in combination can ensure your home makes a lasting impression on buyers.
